A Place of Safety for children in Dominica

This project is based in the Southern end of The Commonwealth of Dominica a windward Island in the Caribbean.  The construction of the project began earlier 2007 and is almost completed.   It will be a facility where children who can no longer live safely at home because of neglect, physical or sexual abuse, or who may have been abandoned by their parents or carers, will be accommodated.

During their period of accommodation, (usually 3mths in the first instance) attempts will be made to progress rehabilitative and therapeutic work with the children and families, aiming to establish whether the parents’/carers behavior towards their children is likely to change.

If however at the end of this period it is felt that it was not safe to return these children home, they would then be placed with one of a group of locally recruited and trained specialist foster carers, for a longer period of time to be looked after.  The carers are paid a small sum to take care of extra child care expenses.

I am privileged to be an avid supporter of this project, as I sincerely believe it will offer vulnerable children on the Island improved life chances. Through my active involvement in the Dominica Oversea Nationals Association we have been fund raising to assist with the payment of the specialist foster carers.  The Specialist Foster Carers will be a life line for many of these vulnerable children in the future.

I would appeal to guests visiting this site to join our fundraising efforts; all donations will greatly assist this very worthy cause.
